As a camera operator and sound recordist for television programming, my role is crucial in capturing high-quality video footage and audio recordings. Working for MWC Media on the television program called Hotels by Design, I am responsible for all camera operations and co-direct on a variety of scenes. With years of experience producing content for television and owning all the required production equipment, I ensure that the program is visually and audibly engaging.
Capturing the Moment: The Vital Role of a Camera Operator in Television Production
My primary responsibility is to capture high-quality footage that meets the director’s vision. This requires me to operate the camera skillfully, keeping the framing, focus, and exposure in check. I also need to be able to anticipate the director’s needs, such as the type of shot or camera movement required to tell the story effectively.
In addition to capturing high-quality footage, I am also responsible for sound recording. This involves selecting the appropriate microphones and positioning them in the right location to capture clear and crisp audio. I also need to monitor the audio levels and adjust them as needed to prevent any distortion or clipping.
As a co-director, I work closely with the director to ensure that the shots are visually engaging and align with the program’s overall vision. This means that I need to be able to anticipate the director’s needs and offer creative solutions to any problems that arise on set.
Hotels by Design Season 1: Australia and New Zealand
In 2020 I was invited to film 10 hotels in Queensland for the Hotels by Design television show. An incredible opportunity to not only experience some amazing hotels but also to work as a one-man production crew on a television production.
I was responsible for all video footage and audio recording. Working closely with series producer Mike Chapman and TV host Peter Colquhoun, this was a very exciting project to be a part of.

Pre-Production
Reach out and tell us about what you’re wanting to achieve. There are a variety of video styles to choose from. During this phase, we’ll discuss scripts and storyboards, locations and talent.

Production
This is our favourite phase because we get to play with our cameras, drones, action cams etc. We also pride ourselves on making this a wonderful experience for our on-screen talent!

Post-Production
This phase is where it all comes together, just like a digital jigsaw. It’s a magical phase during which our creativity runs wild with transitions, storytelling, soundtracks and branding. This is when you’ll get to see your video for the very first time!

Delivery
Once the final edit has been approved, your video will be delivered via the required project format. Whether your video is to be broadcast on television, played at cinemas or simply uploaded to your social media, 2 Gems Media will deliver as per spec.
