A chance encounter at a Gold Coast night market became a character-led brand film and a complete suite of social video edits for artist Dean Turner.
The artwork that stopped me
In October 2025, I encountered Dean Turner's artwork at a Friday night market in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. I was immediately struck by both the craft and the concept.
Dean's work brought so many of my musical heroes together inside one enormous scene. The detail invited you to keep looking. Every face, gesture and reference became another discovery, turning the artwork into something you did not simply view, but explored.
A conversation became a film
Scott was looking after the stall on Dean's behalf that evening. We spoke for around half an hour about the artwork, the stories within it and the people behind the project. I came close to buying a piece on the spot, but the conversation took another direction when I mentioned that I was a videographer and suggested filming an interview with Dean.
Scott took the idea back to the team. The following month I met Dean, Mary and Scott on location on the Gold Coast to capture the story properly.
I set up a multi-camera interview and worked through a series of questions in a conversational style. I genuinely enjoy getting to know people, and keeping the atmosphere relaxed and easy going is an important part of how I work. When someone feels comfortable, the interview stops feeling like a performance and starts sounding like them. That natural conversation gave us the honest, personal material the film needed.

Finding the person inside the brand
The strongest brand films are rarely built around a list of services. They are built around a person, a point of view and a reason to care.
For Dean, the heart of the story was the combination of painstaking artistic detail and a genuine love of music. The interview gave us the narrative foundation, while the artwork, location and natural exchanges between Dean, Mary and Scott gave the film its texture and personality.
Dave's passion, experience and ability to lead interviews to get the best content from a filming session was outstanding.

Bringing the canvas to life
To help the campaign capture attention, I used AI-assisted animation to introduce movement within Dean's canvas. Familiar figures and details were carefully brought to life, transforming a still artwork into a short visual moment that encouraged viewers to stop, look closer and discover more.
The intention was not to replace the character of the original work. It was to extend its sense of energy and discovery into video, while keeping Dean's artwork at the centre of the experience.
One story, shaped for every screen
The finished interview became more than one video. I created a widescreen feature, a square 1080 × 1080 edit and vertical reels for social media. Each version was re-framed and paced for its intended screen, while preserving the character and message of the original story.
This approach gave the Dean Turner Art team a flexible collection of assets rather than a single film. The main piece could introduce Dean in depth, while the shorter formats could earn attention and carry individual moments into social feeds.

A story worth discovering
What began with a conversation at a market stall became a complete visual story about an artist whose work rewards curiosity. That same sense of discovery shaped the production, from the first question in the interview to the final social edit.
For me, it is also a reminder of why I value meeting people, following an instinct and making room for unexpected creative opportunities. Sometimes the best project begins before there is even a brief.
