01 · THE BRIEF
More than
event coverage.
Forest Lake State High School travelled from Brisbane to Sydney to compete at the Australian Dance Festival. I joined the Dance Program of Excellence for the Sydney component to document the students' experience.
The assignment quickly became more substantial than recording a performance. The real story was unfolding in the preparation, friendships, nerves, teaching, interviews, workshops, competition heats, finals and everything happening between those moments.
THE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE
The story lived
beyond the stage.
The festival gave the students access to a much wider dance community. Alongside workshops, rehearsals and competition, they encountered established performers and popular dance creators. For my daughter Christal, meeting Cadel and Mia became another memorable part of the Sydney experience.
I loved the challenge of documenting the journey of 48 students at one of Australia's biggest dance competitions. Moving with the group through workshops, rehearsals, backstage preparation and performance meant staying alert to the moments that revealed their energy, nerves, friendships and determination.

02 · THREE DAYS IN SYDNEY
Working inside
a moving story.
This was not a controlled corporate shoot. Production moved through public spaces, arrivals, rehearsal areas, backstage rooms, workshops, crowded event spaces, dark theatres and performance stages.
Lighting, access, sound and shooting positions changed constantly. Multiple cameras captured observational footage alongside approximately a dozen student, teacher and supporting interviews. The job was to recognise the moments that might matter later, record them without disrupting the experience and keep enough technical consistency for the footage to work together in post.

03 · THE EDITORIAL CHALLENGE
Two performances.
Two different purposes.
The narrative question
The heats were condensed into preparation, selected performance moments, reaction and qualification. The question was simple: can they make the finals?
The emotional payoff
The finals performance was allowed to breathe. By then, the audience understood the work, pressure and anticipation that had brought the dancers to that moment.
“The hardest part wasn't capturing the footage. It was discovering the story hidden inside it.”
04 · FINDING THE STORY
The edit began
with listening.
Three days of coverage produced multiple camera sources, two performances, rehearsals, workshops, backstage activity and a substantial collection of interviews. The first stage of post-production was not polish. It was story discovery.
I built chronological stringouts, selected interview material and looked for emotional beats, humour, personality and transitions. Interview audio became a narrative tool, allowing students and teachers to carry sections of the film in their own words while the observational pictures showed the wider experience.
The key eventually became clear: the documentary was not simply about the dance routine. It was about everything that led to the performance. Once that was understood, the structure began to fall into place.

05 · SOUND + MUSIC
Built to feel
present in the room.
Location ambience, backstage sound, interview dialogue, applause, performance audio and natural reactions were used to keep the film grounded in the experience. During important emotional moments, natural sound was given space rather than allowing music to dominate.
The soundtrack was developed around the crew and the shape of the documentary. Hip hop, street culture, UK drill, krump and bass-driven contemporary production informed a collection of cues for anticipation, interviews, backstage sequences, finals build-up, the award and celebration.
Original soundtrack produced and curated by Dave Dwyer / 2 Gems Media using licensed AI-assisted music production tools.

06 · THE RESULT
A journey with
an earned ending.
The finished project became much more than a conventional event highlight. It records a significant experience in the students' lives: preparation, friendship, pressure, teamwork, teacher support, qualification, performance and celebration.
The crew's journey concluded with recognition for Most Creative Choreography. In the film, that award works because the audience has already seen what it took to reach the moment.
WHAT THE SCHOOL SAID
A film they will
treasure for years.
“Watching it back gave me goosebumps! You've told our story so beautifully, and I know this is something our students, families and teachers will treasure for years to come.”
Forest Lake State High School
“Seeing these amazing videos, you have made me quite emotional. I cannot thank you enough. What an amazing archive and artistic expression of what happened for us and our school in Sydney.”
BEHIND THE PROJECT · DAVE DWYER
Knowing what to capture.
Discovering what it meant.
Projects like this remind me why I enjoy documentary-style filmmaking so much. I went into Sydney knowing what I needed to capture, but not necessarily knowing exactly what the finished story would become.
When I returned to Brisbane, the real challenge began: making sense of it. There were days where I spent more time thinking about the structure than physically cutting footage. Eventually it became obvious that the film was not simply about the performance. It was about everything that led to it.
There was a personal dimension too. I was filming a school community while also watching my daughter Christal experience the festival. Balancing those perspectives made the finished documentary especially meaningful to me.
